Travel nursing can be a difficult job. You are required to have excellent communication skills and be flexible to adapt to the needs and desires of your patients. As a nurse in the Travel Nursing field, you are constantly in the middle of patients. You are responsible for their health and welfare. You are also expected to be able to communicate and make decisions that are best for your patient.
Well, that’s easy for me to say because I’m a travel nurse, but that’s not exactly the case for the thousands of nurses who work at home and in hospitals. In fact, I had some of the hardest patients of my entire career in my hometown of New York City. I worked in a hospital for four years and saw first-hand how difficult they can be. The nurses I worked with were the most competent, caring, and dedicated people I have ever met.
As I mentioned earlier, the care that a home hospital nurse provides is generally much more compassionate than a nurse in a hospital. But that doesn’t mean that a nurse in a home hospital doesn’t also have to treat patients the same way. So the question is, how do you get the best out of the best? And that’s where the answer is truly a bit more nuanced than just “get good grades in school.
The answer is to take a good hard look at the hospital you work in and try to make sure that it is really a home for the patient, the way that the hospital is designed to be. Many hospitals are designed to be a very impersonal environment in which patients are rarely allowed to interact with other patients. There are also ways that nurses can be encouraged to interact.
One of the best ways to do that is with some form of social interaction. One of my favorite examples of this is with the nurses at the hospital I work at. The hospitals I had the chance to go to are a bit more like a high school cafeteria. They are clean and organized, but they are also very impersonal. They aren’t used to having non-hospital staff talking to each other. They are used to seeing patients from other hospitals and other doctors.
With hospital nurses, I think you can see the difference. I was at a hospital where the only staff who ever entered a room was the doctor or nurse. The rest of the time, I would be in the hallway talking to the nurses. At that hospital, at least one nurse would always stop me and say, “I want to know how you are doing.” I would always tell them, “I’m doing good.
When you’re in the hospital, you’re in the hospital. You’re not being treated by a doctor or a nurse. The doctor may be the patient’s doctor, but it’s still the doctor. As much as we like to think we have that separation between patients and doctors, it isn’t always so clear. A hospital is definitely a small place.
One of the biggest fears of nurses is that the patients will get sick, and that they will be the ones to get sick. But you will find out how true that is in a hospital. You will find out how much of a priority you really are, by what you do while you are there. As nurses, we have to make sure that we are on call 24/7 and that we are taking care of our patients, but that isnt always easy.
When it comes to the patients, they need to know that there is someone who will take care of them no matter what happens. And also that the nurse will be there for them. As a nurse, you cant leave your patients in the hands of some random person. You need to be able to trust that you are in capable hands.
But you also need to know when to go. While traveling, you will need to be able to quickly make a stop and pick up your patient’s lunch, which is not always easy. You might end up taking the patient back to their home because you can’t find a home for the patient. That’s why you need to be able to call ahead so that you know what to expect and when the best time for you to pick up your patient is.
