I should be more like him. He has the drive and the confidence to make me feel bad about myself. He can make me feel like I’m a failure. He can make me feel like I’m a loser. He’s a great boyfriend because he’s made me feel better about myself.

I know people who would disagree with you. My boyfriend would say I’m a failure because I can’t make a new project take off, because I’m bad at math, because I got kicked out of a dorm, and because I got a bad haircut.

My boyfriend and I don’t agree that I am a failure because I do everything I can to make things fly. I have the drive it takes to get things done. I have the confidence to be open to new ideas, and I have the confidence to try new things. He has the confidence to ask me questions, and he has the confidence to take me seriously when I give him a hard time. He has the confidence to tell me he loves me.

While I’m sure I’m not the only person who has a friend who feels bad about themselves, I’m just curious as to why it happens in the first place.

The reason it happens is that we are social creatures. It’s not just that we all look down on ourselves; it’s because we all make mistakes. When we go through life with the weight of a reputation on our shoulders, we stop trying to find the perfect smile, the perfect pair of shoes, the perfect suit, because we get so wrapped up in our own selves that we forget to appreciate the gifts that others have thrown our way.

The problem is that we all have to start somewhere and these mistakes are the best steppingstones we can use to get there. I am not saying that you should be an arrogant jerk or that you should try and impress everyone with your perfect self. That’s not who you are. If you’re not putting yourself first, then you really are not making yourself feel good about yourself.
